How this calculation works
The Tile, Box & Grout Calculator computes exact tile unit counts, required packaging boxes, waste factors, and estimated grout powder for bathrooms, kitchens, and floors.
Mathematical formula and logic
Tile Area (sq ft) = Tile Square Inches / 144. Gross Area = (Length × Width) × (1 + Waste % / 100). Total Tiles = ceil(Gross Area / Tile Area). Total Boxes = ceil(Total Tiles / Tiles per Box).
Worked example
Tiling a 10 × 8 ft bathroom floor (80 sq ft) with 12x24 inch tiles (2 sq ft each) at 10% waste requires 88 sq ft of tile coverage = 44 tiles = 5 boxes (10 tiles/box).
Calculation assumptions
- Tile area converts square inches to square feet (144 sq in = 1 sq ft).
- Full unopened box purchasing is assumed.
Frequently asked questions
How much tile waste should I factor in for diagonal layouts?
Diagonal or herringbone layouts produce significantly more cut scraps along walls; budget a 15% to 20% waste allowance compared to 10% for straight grid patterns.
What is the difference between sanded and unsanded grout?
Use sanded grout for joint lines 1/8-inch or wider to prevent shrinkage cracking. Use unsanded grout for narrow joints (under 1/8-inch) and easily scratched polished stone/glass tiles.
How many square feet does a 25 lb bag of grout cover?
A 25 lb bag of cementitious grout covers approximately 100 to 150 sq ft of 12x12 tile with 1/8-inch joint lines.
Should I seal my grout lines after tiling?
Yes, cement-based grouts are porous and will absorb water, mildew, and stains unless sealed with a penetrating sealer 48 to 72 hours after installation.
What thinset mortar trowel notch size should I use?
Use a 1/4" x 3/8" square notch trowel for 12x12 tiles, and a 1/2" x 1/2" square notch trowel for large-format 12x24 tiles to ensure >85% mortar coverage.
