Mathematical formula and logic
Total Area = Walls Area + (Include Ceiling ? Length × Width : 0) - Openings (approx 10%). Sheets = ceil(Total Area / Sheet Area).
Worked example
For a 16 × 12 ft room with 8 ft ceilings (448 sq ft walls + 192 sq ft ceiling = 640 sq ft total): Using 4x8 sheets (32 sq ft/sheet) requires 20 drywall sheets, approx 10 gallons of joint compound, and 640 drywall screws.

- 1 drywall sheet requires approximately 32 to 36 screws (spaced 12-16 inches on center).
- 100 sq ft of drywall requires approximately 1.5 gallons of ready-mix all-purpose joint compound.

Should I use 4x8 or 4x12 drywall sheets?
4x8 sheets are lighter (approx 50 lbs) and easier for solo DIYers to carry. 4x12 sheets reduce the number of vertical butt joints by 25%, producing smoother walls for professional finishers.
Should ceilings be drywalled before walls?
Yes, always hang ceiling drywall first. The top edge of the wall drywall sheets will then support the outer perimeter edges of the ceiling boards.
