How this calculation works
The Flooring Calculator computes total room area, accounts for waste and pattern cuts, and calculates the exact number of flooring boxes and total material expense for hardwood, vinyl plank, and tile.
Mathematical formula and logic
Total Sq Ft Needed = (Length × Width) × (1 + Waste % / 100). Total Boxes = ceil(Total Sq Ft / Sq Ft per Box).
Worked example
A 15 ft × 12 ft room has a base area of 180 sq ft. Adding a 10% waste allowance requires 198 sq ft. At 20 sq ft per box, you need 10 boxes (200 sq ft total purchased) costing $693 at $3.50/sq ft.

How much extra flooring should I order for waste?
Standard straight-lay plank installations require a 10% waste factor. Diagonal, herringbone, or chevron patterns require 15% to 20% extra due to extensive angle cuts.
What should I do with leftover flooring boxes?
Keep at least 1 spare box in storage for future plank replacements or water damage repairs, as flooring dye lots and grain styles are frequently discontinued.
How do I measure an L-shaped room for flooring?
Divide the L-shape into two separate rectangular sections, calculate the square footage of each rectangle, and sum them together before adding your waste percentage.
Does flooring square footage include closet space?
Yes, measure closet depth and width separately and add it to the main room's gross area.
What is the difference between laminate and luxury vinyl plank (LVP)?
