Mathematical formula and logic
Cubic Yards = (Length ft × Width ft × Depth in) / 324. (Note: 27 cu ft × 12 in = 324). 2 Cu Ft Bags = Cubic Yards × 13.5. 3 Cu Ft Bags = Cubic Yards × 9.
Worked example
A 25 ft × 6 ft garden bed (150 sq ft) mulched at 3 inches depth requires (150 × 3) / 324 = 1.39 Cubic Yards (approx 19 two-cubic-foot bags).
