Mathematical formula and logic
Deck Area = Length × Width. Decking Rows = ceil((Width × 12) / 5.75). Total Joists = ceil((Length × 12) / Joist Spacing) + 1. Posts = ceil(Length / 8 + 1) × 2.
Worked example
A 20 × 12 ft deck (240 sq ft) with 16-inch joist spacing requires 16 joists (2x8x12ft), 26 rows of 20 ft decking boards (approx 52 twelve-foot boards), 6 support posts (4x4), and approx 840 deck screws.
