How Many Calories Should My Dog Eat Daily? WSAVA RER & DER Formula
Over 55% of domestic dogs are classified as clinically overweight or obese by veterinarians. Excess body fat exacerbates canine osteoarthritis, elevates cranial cruciate ligament (CCL) rupture risk, and reduces average canine lifespan by up to 1.8 years.
This guide explains the clinical metabolic equations used by veterinary nutritionists—Resting Energy Requirement (RER) and Daily Energy Requirement (DER)—and connects to the CalculatorAll Dog Calorie Calculator.
The WSAVA Canine Calorie Equations
1. Convert Weight to Kilograms
Weight (kg) = Weight (lbs) / 2.20462
2. Calculate Resting Energy Requirement (RER)
RER (kcal/day) = 70 × (Weight in kg)^0.75
3. Calculate Daily Energy Requirement (DER)
DER (kcal/day) = RER × Life Stage / Activity Factor
Common DER Multipliers:
- Neutered Adult (Typical Household Pet):
1.6 × RER - Intact Adult:
1.8 × RER - Weight Loss Diet:
1.0 × RER(calculated on target ideal weight) - Active / Working Dog:
2.0 to 3.0 × RER - Puppy (under 4 months):
3.0 × RER - Senior Dog:
1.4 × RER

Worked Example: 50 lb Neutered Adult Dog
- Convert to Kilograms:
50 / 2.20462 = 22.68 kg. - Calculate RER:
70 × (22.68)^0.75 = 70 × 10.395 = 728 kcal/day. - Calculate DER (1.6x multiplier):
728 × 1.6 = 1,165 kcal/day. - Determine Kibble Portions (at 375 kcal/cup):
1,165 / 375 = 3.1 cups/day(split into two meals of ~1.5 cups).

The 10% Treat Rule
Veterinarians mandate that treats, dog biscuits, and table scraps should never exceed 10% of total daily calories (e.g. max 115 kcal/day for a 50 lb dog) to prevent nutrient dilution and rapid weight gain.
