How to Calculate Aquarium Tank Volume, Water Weight & Filter GPH
Calculate aquarium water volume in US gallons and liters from exterior dimensions, filled tank weight, and required filter turnover flow rate.

How to Calculate Aquarium Tank Volume, Water Weight & Filter GPH
Setting up a home aquarium requires calculating exact water volume to properly dose water conditioners and medications, ensuring your flooring can support the massive structural weight of the filled tank, and sizing an adequate mechanical filtration system.
This guide explains the cubic inch to gallon conversion formulas, water weight factors, filter turnover ratings, and connects to the CalculatorAll Aquarium Volume Calculator.
The Aquarium Gallons Formula
Because 1 US liquid gallon equals exactly 231 cubic inches:
Gross Gallons = (Length in Inches × Width in Inches × Height in Inches) / 231
Volume in Liters = Gross Gallons × 3.78541
Net Water Gallons ≈ Gross Gallons × 0.85 (accounting for substrate displacement, decorations, and 1-inch top water line).

Filled Aquarium Weight Formula
Fresh water weighs 8.34 pounds per gallon (1.0 kg per Liter). When combined with the weight of the glass tank, gravel substrate, and canopy:
Total Filled Tank Weight (lbs) ≈ Total Gallons × 10 to 12 lbs/gal
Worked Example: Standard 55-Gallon Aquarium (48" × 13" × 20")
- Calculate Gross Volume:
(48 × 13 × 20) / 231 = 12,480 / 231 = 54.0 Gallons (204.4 Liters). - Calculate Water Weight Alone:
54.0 × 8.34 lbs = 450.4 lbs. - Calculate Total Filled System Weight:
450.4 lbs water + 75 lbs glass + 50 lbs gravel = ~575 lbs (261 kg). - Structural Check: A 55-gallon tank places ~575 lbs over a 4-foot footprint; always place perpendicular to floor joists for heavy tanks.

Sizing Your Aquarium Filter (Turnover Rate)
Aquarium filters should cycle the entire tank water volume 4 to 5 times per hour (4-5x GPH) for freshwater community tanks, and 8 to 10x GPH for messy cichlids, goldfish, or saltwater reef tanks:
- 55-Gallon Tank: Requires minimum 220 to 275 GPH filter flow rate.
