How this calculation works
The Dog Daily Calorie & Feeding Calculator computes your canine companion's Resting Energy Requirement (RER) and Daily Energy Requirement (DER) in kilocalories and measured cups of food using World Small Animal Veterinary Association (WSAVA) clinical equations.
Mathematical formula and logic
Weight (kg) = Weight (lbs) / 2.20462. RER = 70 × (Weight in kg)^0.75. DER (kcal/day) = RER × Life Stage Factor. Daily Cups = DER / Kibble kcal per cup.
Worked example
A 50 lb (22.68 kg) neutered adult dog has an RER of 70 × (22.68)^0.75 = 728 kcal. Applying the 1.6x factor yields 1,165 kcal/day (~3.1 cups of 375 kcal/cup kibble, split into 2 meals of ~1.5 cups).
Calculation assumptions
- Allometric metabolic scaling formula: RER = 70 × BW_kg^0.75.
- Caloric density of standard premium dry kibble averages 350 to 400 kcal/cup.
Frequently asked questions
What is the difference between RER and DER for dogs?
Resting Energy Requirement (RER) is the basal energy required to maintain organ function at rest. Daily Energy Requirement (DER) multiplies RER by an activity/life stage factor to account for exercise, growth, neutering status, and temperature.
How much should I feed my dog to lose weight?
For safe canine weight loss, feed for your dog's *target ideal weight* using a DER multiplier of 1.0 × RER, aiming for a safe 1% to 2% loss of body weight per week.
Do treats count toward daily dog calories?
Yes! Veterinary nutritionists mandate the '10% Rule': treats and table scraps should never exceed 10% of your dog's total daily calorie intake to prevent nutritional imbalances and obesity.
Why are feeding guidelines on dog food bags often too high?
Manufacturer bag charts provide broad general guidelines for intact, active dogs. Most indoor neutered companion dogs require 15% to 20% fewer calories than bag recommendations to prevent unhealthy weight gain.
How often should I weigh my dog?
Weigh adult dogs once a month and puppies every 1 to 2 weeks during rapid growth phases to adjust feeding portion sizes accordingly.
