How this calculation works
The Cat Daily Calorie & Portion Calculator determines your feline's daily energetic requirements (DER) and translates calories into wet food cans and dry food portions to prevent obesity and feline diabetes.
Mathematical formula and logic
Weight (kg) = Weight (lbs) / 2.20462. RER = 70 × (Weight in kg)^0.75. DER (kcal/day) = RER × Feline Factor.
Worked example
A 10 lb (4.54 kg) neutered adult cat has an RER of 70 × (4.54)^0.75 = 218 kcal. Applying the 1.2x factor equals 262 kcal/day (approx 3 three-ounce cans of wet food, or 0.6 cups of dry kibble).

An average healthy 10-pound indoor neutered adult cat requires approximately 200 to 250 calories (kcal) per day to maintain stable weight.
Is wet food better than dry food for cats?
Wet food provides high moisture content (75-80% water), promoting urinary tract health, preventing kidney stones, and offering higher protein with lower carbohydrate density than dry kibble.
Why is rapid weight loss dangerous for overweight cats?
When cats lose weight too rapidly or stop eating, the liver is overwhelmed by mobilising fat stores, triggering Hepatic Lipidosis (fatty liver disease)—a life-threatening medical emergency. Weight loss must never exceed 1-2% of body weight per week.
How can I tell if my cat is overweight?
Run your hands gently over your cat's ribcage. You should easily feel the ribs under a thin layer of fat without pressing hard. From above, you should see an hourglass waist behind the ribs.
Can cats self-regulate their food intake with free-feeding?
Most domestic indoor cats will overeat if dry kibble is left out continuously (free-fed). Portion-controlled scheduled meals are strongly recommended to prevent feline obesity.
