How this calculation works
The Alcohol Units & Calories Calculator computes official UK alcohol units, US standard drinks, and total empty beverage calories based on drink volume and ABV percentage.
Mathematical formula and logic
UK Alcohol Units = (Volume in mL × ABV %) / 1,000. Alcohol Calories = Volume (mL) × (ABV / 100) × 0.8 × 7 kcal/g.
Worked example
A 175 mL glass of 13% ABV wine contains (175 × 13) / 1,000 = 2.28 UK Alcohol Units (approx 1.3 US standard drinks) and ~127 pure alcohol calories.
Calculation assumptions
- 1 UK Unit equals 10 mL (8 grams) of pure ethanol (NHS standard).
- Pure alcohol contains 7 kcal of energy per gram.
Frequently asked questions
What is the recommended weekly alcohol limit?
The UK Chief Medical Officers guideline advises both men and women not to exceed 14 units of alcohol per week on a regular basis, spread evenly over 3 or more days.
How many units are in a pint of 5% beer?
A standard UK pint (568 mL) of 5% ABV lager contains (568 × 5) / 1,000 = 2.84 UK Alcohol Units.
How many units are in a standard shot of spirits?
A single 25 mL measure of 40% ABV vodka, whiskey, or gin contains exactly 1.0 UK Alcohol Unit.
How long does it take the human body to process 1 unit of alcohol?
On average, a healthy human liver takes approximately 1 hour to metabolize and clear 1 UK unit of alcohol from the bloodstream.
Does drinking water speed up alcohol metabolism?
Water helps prevent dehydration and hangover symptoms, but it does not accelerate the liver's enzymatic rate of alcohol breakdown.
