Mathematical formula and logic
Score Differential = (113 / Slope Rating) × (Adjusted Gross Score - Course Rating - PCC). Handicap Index = Average of best 8 differentials out of last 20 rounds.
Worked example
A round of 85 on a golf course with a 71.5 Course Rating and 125 Slope Rating produces a Score Differential of (113 / 125) × (85 - 71.5 - 0) = 12.20.
