Building an interior flight of stairs or an exterior deck staircase requires strict mathematical precision. A variance of even 3/8-inch between individual steps creates a dangerous tripping hazard and will fail municipal building inspections under the International Residential Code (IRC).

IRC Residential Building Code Requirements

  • Maximum Individual Step Riser Height: 7.75 inches (7-3/4").
  • Minimum Individual Tread Run Depth: 10.0 inches (11.0 inches with nosing overhang).
  • Maximum Step-to-Step Riser Variance: 3/8 inch (0.375") across the entire flight.
  • The Comfort Rule (Rule of 18): 1 Riser + 1 Tread = 17 to 18 inches (or 2 Risers + 1 Tread = 24 to 25 inches).

Step-by-Step Staircase Math

Suppose the Total Vertical Rise from lower finished floor to upper deck surface is 108 inches (9 feet):

  1. Calculate Number of Risers: Divide total rise by the ideal 7.5-inch target riser height: 108 / 7.5 = 14.4 risers → Round to 14 risers.
  2. Calculate Exact Individual Riser Height: Individual Rise = 108 inches / 14 = 7.714 inches (approx 7-11/16") (Complies with IRC maximum 7.75").
  3. Calculate Number of Treads: Number of Treads = Number of Risers - 1 = 14 - 1 = 13 treads.
  4. Calculate Total Horizontal Run (at standard 10" tread depth): Total Run = 13 × 10 inches = 130 inches (10 ft 10 in).
  5. Calculate Stringer Board Length (Pythagorean Theorem): Stringer Length = √(Total Rise² + Total Run²) = √(108² + 130²) = √(11664 + 16900) = √28564 = 169.0 inches (14.08 ft). (Purchase 16-foot 2×12 lumber boards for stringers).
  6. Calculate Incline Angle: Stair Angle = arctan(108 / 130) ≈ 39.7° (Ideal comfortable range: 30° to 40°).
