How to Calculate Running Pace, Splits & Race Finish Times
Pacing is the single most critical tactical factor in distance running. Starting a 5K or marathon even 20 seconds per mile too fast causes premature glycogen depletion, lactic acid accumulation, and late-race fatigue ("hitting the wall").

The Running Pace Formulas
Pace per Mile = Total Time in Minutes / Total Distance in Miles
Pace per Kilometer = Total Time in Minutes / Total Distance in Kilometers
Speed (mph) = Total Distance in Miles / (Total Time in Minutes / 60)
Worked Example: 25-Minute 5K
Running a 5 Kilometer race (3.10686 miles) in 25 minutes and 00 seconds:
- Calculate Pace per Mile:
25.0 / 3.10686 = 8.046 minutes = 8 minutes and 3 seconds (8:03/mi). - Calculate Pace per Kilometer:
25.0 / 5.0 = 5.00 minutes = 5 minutes and 0 seconds (5:00/km). - Calculate Speed (mph):
3.10686 / (25 / 60) = 7.46 mph (12.00 km/h).
