How to Calculate Flight Duration and Great Circle Air Distance

The Core Flight Duration Formula

Total Flight Duration = (Great Circle Distance in Miles / Cruise Ground Speed in mph) + Taxi & Routing Buffer

Where:

  • Great Circle Distance: The shortest surface geodesic route between two airports across Earth's curved spherical globe.
  • Cruise Ground Speed: Commercial jetliners (Boeing 787, Airbus A350) cruise at Mach 0.82 to 0.85 (540 to 570 mph / 870 to 920 km/h) true airspeed.
  • Taxi & Holding Buffer: Standard FAA/ICAO scheduling models add 30 minutes (0.50 hours) for runway taxiing, takeoff climb, approach holding patterns, and airport gate docking.

Worked Example: New York (JFK) to London (LHR)

  • Great Circle Distance: 3,451 statute miles (3,006 Nautical Miles / 5,567 km).
  • Cruise Airspeed: 550 mph.
  • Average Eastbound Jetstream Tailwind: +50 mph (Effective Ground Speed = 600 mph).
  1. Calculate In-Air Flight Time: 3,451 miles / 600 mph = 5.75 hours (5 hours 45 minutes).
  2. Add 30-Minute Terminal Buffer: 5h 45m + 30m = 6 hours and 15 minutes scheduled gate-to-gate time.

Why Eastbound Flights Are Faster: The Jet Stream

The Polar and Subtropical Jet Streams are high-altitude atmospheric wind ribbons that circulate from west to east at speeds between 80 and 200+ mph at cruising altitudes of 30,000 to 40,000 feet.
