The 8:1 Rule: Bits vs. Bytes

In digital computing:

  • 1 Byte (B) = 8 bits (b)
  • 1 Megabyte (MB) = 8 Megabits (Mb)
  • 1 Gigabyte (GB) = 8,000 Megabits (or 1,000 Megabytes)

When an ISP provides a 100 Mbps connection, your maximum theoretical download speed in Megabytes per second is:

Theoretical Transfer Rate (MB/s) = Bandwidth in Mbps / 8

File Transfer Time Formula

To calculate the time required to download or upload a file:

Transfer Time (Seconds) = (File Size in Megabytes × 8) / (Bandwidth in Mbps × Network Efficiency)

Where Network Efficiency typically averages 0.90 to 0.95 (90-95%) to account for TCP handshakes, packet headers, and routing latency.

Worked Example

Calculating the time to download a 50 GB game update (50,000 MB) over a 300 Mbps fiber connection (assuming 95% efficiency):

  1. Convert File Size to Megabits: 50,000 MB × 8 = 400,000 Megabits
  2. Calculate Effective Bandwidth: 300 Mbps × 0.95 = 285 Mbps
  3. Calculate Transfer Time: 400,000 / 285 = 1,403.5 seconds
  4. Convert to Minutes: 1,403.5 / 60 ≈ 23 minutes and 23 seconds
